Signals After Midnight
Some recordings are made. Others are found.
Signals After Midnight is a short liminal fiction inspired by The Lost Tapes – Signals After Midnight, a collection of dark ambient recordings by Wartonno Sound. You can listen to the playlist while reading. Headphones recommended.
The first recording arrived at 00:17.
There was no sender.
No file name.
No timestamp.
Only two minutes of rain.
Mara almost deleted it.
She had been sitting alone in the archive room for six hours, transferring old field recordings from damaged hard drives onto the new server. Most were ordinary things.
Traffic beneath bridges.
Empty shopping centres after closing.
Ventilation systems inside abandoned office buildings.
Rooms people wanted remembered before the buildings disappeared.
The night shift suited her.
Nobody asked questions after midnight.
She put on her headphones and opened the file.
Rain filled the room.
Not loud rain.
Patient rain.
The kind that falls steadily enough that, after a while, you stop hearing individual drops.
Behind it came a low mechanical hum.
Then something distant.
Metal against metal.
Mara looked at the waveform.
Two minutes exactly.
At 01:03, another file appeared.
Again, no sender.
Again, exactly two minutes.
This one sounded like an apartment.
A refrigerator humming.
Air moving through old ventilation ducts.
The faint vibration of glass in a window frame.
Almost nothing happened.
And yet Mara found herself listening twice.
During the second playback, she noticed the sound beneath everything else.
A frequency so low she felt it before she properly heard it.
Something running far below the room.
She removed her headphones.
The archive was silent.
Fluorescent lights.
Computer fans.
The vending machine at the end of the corridor.
Nothing unusual.
She opened the file properties.
There were none.
No recording device.
No creation date.
No location.
Only one line of text.
TAPE 002
Mara stared at it.
She went back to the first recording.
Its properties had changed.
TAPE 001
Then another line appeared beneath it.
Rain Inside the Station.
She stopped moving.
The rain suddenly made sense.
Not rain outside a station.
Rain inside it.
Mara listened again.
Now she could hear the size of the place.
A large underground platform.
Concrete walls.
Empty tracks.
Water falling somewhere above the microphones.
But there was something wrong with the acoustics.
No open entrance.
No wind.
No city.
The station sounded completely sealed.
At 02:12, the third recording arrived.
Mara did not open it immediately.
She watched the file icon sit on the screen.
Waiting.
Eventually she clicked.
Wind moved through grass.
High-voltage cables hummed overhead.
Somewhere far away, an electrical transformer pulsed.
She pictured an open field at night.
Black pylons crossing the horizon.
Wet grass moving beneath them.
After forty-seven seconds, the electrical frequency changed.
Not randomly.
It rose when the recorder moved.
Fell when it stopped.
Rose again.
As though the power lines were responding to whoever carried it.
Mara took off her headphones.
The archive suddenly felt much smaller.
She searched the database for the three titles.
Nothing.
She searched the internet.
Nothing useful.
No station.
No apartment.
No field.
At 03:04, she noticed something else.
The files were appearing inside a folder she had never created.

THE LOST TAPES
Inside it was another folder.
SIGNALS AFTER MIDNIGHT
Three recordings waited there.
Beneath them were five empty spaces.
Not empty files.
Spaces.
Perfect gaps in the list where files seemed to belong.
Mara leaned closer.
Eight tapes.
Whatever this was, it was incomplete.
She should have called someone.
Instead, she made coffee.
There are moments when fear does not make you leave.
Sometimes it makes you listen more carefully.
At 03:41, Tape 001 changed.
A new sound had appeared near the end.
Footsteps.
Mara was certain they had not been there before.
Slow.
Distant.
Someone walking along the platform.
She opened Tape 002.
The apartment recording had changed too.
The low frequency remained.
But now there was another sound.
Three soft knocks.
Not at the apartment door.
Somewhere inside the room.
Tape 003 had changed as well.
The grass still moved.
The power lines still hummed.
But at one minute and fifty-eight seconds, just before the recording ended, a voice appeared beneath the electrical noise.
Mara increased the volume.
She played the final two seconds again.
Then again.
It was barely a whisper.
One word.
Her name.
She removed the headphones.
The archive lights flickered once.
Then steadied.
03:52.
Mara stood.
At the end of the archive room was a narrow corridor leading to the storage basement.
She had walked past it hundreds of times.
Tonight, something was different.
The door at the end of the corridor was open.
Only slightly.
Beyond it came the sound of rain.
Mara stayed where she was.
Another file appeared on the computer.
She watched it materialise on the screen.
No sender.
No timestamp.
Two minutes exactly.
The title field was blank.
For several seconds she did nothing.
Then she sat down again.
Put on the headphones.
Pressed play.
At first, she heard only fluorescent lights.
Computer fans.
The vending machine at the end of the corridor.
Then the scrape of a chair.
Her chair.
Mara stopped breathing.
The recording had been made inside the archive.
She listened as a woman stood.
Listened as she walked toward the corridor.
Listened as she stopped before the open basement door.
The recording continued.
Mara looked at the real corridor.
The door was still open.
Rain was still falling somewhere beyond it.
In the headphones, the woman opened the door wider.
Mara did not.
She remained beside the computer.
The recording had reached one minute and forty seconds.
One minute and fifty.
One minute and fifty-five.
Then came footsteps.
Not from the headphones.
Behind her.
The recording ended.
The new file finally gave itself a name.
TAPE 004
Mara did not turn around.
Somewhere inside the building, another recorder started.
And somewhere after midnight, someone else began listening.
The Lost Tapes are still surfacing.
Listen carefully.
